Meet Christine and Niclas, founders of CRA-YON

A passionate duo and true perfumery pioneers, Christine and Niclas Lydeen transform perfume into a colourful, creative and inspiring experience with their CRA-YON brand. Meet this creative duo who are changing the game.

How did you discover your shared passion for perfume?

For us, the translation of an idea or concept into a tangible experience is what fascinates us and drives our creativity. Utilising our diverse skills in visual communication, written language, fashion, and product design, we often use the senses as a starting point. The sense of smell, our most powerful sense, captivates us the most. The ability to bring scent ideas and feelings to life through fragrance is a continual source of inspiration.

Christine's first strong emotional connection to scent occurred while studying at Studio Berçot in Paris. Through a friend, she met a perfumer who introduced her to the world of ingredients and compositions. Later in Sweden, she met Niclas, who was pursuing his master's in design. Together, they realised that their mutual fascination with scent was a powerful shared interest.

What role do you think perfume plays in our lives?

Perfume plays a multifaceted role in our lives. It's not just a luxury; it's a form of self-expression and a tool for well-being. Fragrance can elevate our mood, boost our confidence, and even bring back memories. At CRA-YON, we believe that scent is an invisible superpower that enhances our presence and helps us capture moments, making everyday experiences more meaningful.

 

How did you get the idea to create Cra-yon?

The idea to create CRA-YON emerged from our desire to make fragrance relevant and fun again. We wanted to challenge conventional beauty norms and create a sustainable brand that empowers people to express themselves through scent in innovative ways. Our fascination with the transportive power of fragrance as a well-being enhancer led us to develop CRA-YON.

How do you find the inspiration to continually reinvent perfume?

Inspiration comes from everywhere – art, nature, travel, and even everyday life. We constantly seek new experiences and pay attention to the small details around us. By remaining curious and open to the world, we find endless sources of inspiration to reinvent and modernise classical fragrance families, creating new and exciting scents that resonate with people's emotions and lifestyles.

 

How did you come up with each Cra-yon fragrance?

Each CRA-YON fragrance is designed as part of a Fragrance Wardrobe, with different scents for various moments and moods. We start with a concept or emotion we want to capture and then carefully select ingredients that evoke that feeling. Through a collaborative process, we refine each fragrance until it perfectly embodies the intended experience, allowing our customers to create their own unique combinations and personal styles.

 

Why did you create fragrances to suit every mood and state of mind?

We believe that fragrance should be versatile and adaptable, just like our moods and states of mind. The CRA-YON collection consists of 10 unique scent compositions, each with its own individuality. They are also designed to be combined and layered, offering endless possibilities and providing our customers with the flexibility to choose a scent that aligns with how they feel at any given moment. This approach empowers individuals to use scent as a tool for self-expression and emotional well-being, enhancing their daily experiences.

 

Why was it important for you to offer clean formulas?

Offering noble formulas with sustainable, non-toxic, and creative ingredients is central to our brand ethos. We are committed to sustainability and the well-being of our customers and the planet. By using high-quality, vegan, and cruelty-free ingredients, we ensure that our fragrances are safe, ethical, and environmentally friendly. This commitment reflects our belief that luxury should never come at the expense of health or the environment.

 

What advice would you give to help everyone find their own olfactory signature?

Actually, we empower people to leave behind the old concept of finding a single signature scent. This often makes things complicated and limiting. Why wear the same scent every day when you can instead ask yourself: how do I want to feel today? Then, go explore your fragrance wardrobe for different moods, notes, and scent compositions.
