10 wellness tips from Goop Beauty Founder, Gwyneth Paltrow

Let’s be honest – we all dream of having her glow... While her avant-garde rituals may sometimes seem unconventional, Gwyneth Paltrow has established herself as a true guru of holistic beauty. Let's shine a light on her favourite rituals for regaining glow, both inside and outside.

1. Dry brushing

"I’m obsessed with dry brushing. I rarely take a shower without doing this first, using Goop Beauty's Ultimate Dry Brush all over to brush toward the heart. It’s amazing for exfoliation, skin quality, and energy.”

2. Oil pulling with coconut oil

“The first thing I do when I wake up is oil pulling with raw, organic coconut oil. I put a spoonful in my mouth while I’m opening curtains and everything, and I just sort of swish it around. It’s an Ayurvedic way to remove bacteria from the mouth. I love it.  If you do that and then you use a tongue scraper wow! Your mouth feels super fresh in the morning.”

3. Night cream used as a day cream

“I got this trick from my mom: using night cream during the day. We both have dry skin, so I wanted a cream that was nourishing, such as Goop Beauty's All-in-One Nourishing Face Cream, that I could use night and day and that my skin would just keep reaping the benefits of. This one leaves my skin so soft that I just keep touching it all day.”

4. Morning meditation

“This is one of the most critical parts of my morning routine! I do something called transcendental meditation every morning with my husband. It’s a really nice way to start the day feeling centered, letting the mind empty out. I really find creating a practice or a ritual out of something means you’re definitely investing in yourself for that time every day.”

5. Infrared saunas

"My routine varies on this point depending on whether I’m working from home or the office. If I’m working from home – which I currently do two or three times a week – I use that would-be commuting time to take a sauna. I do an infrared sauna as often as I can, as part of my healing process. A side benefit is my improved skin – which makes me happy and makes me want to double down on skincare even more."

6. Walking 10 000 steps a day

“A long walk outside is my stress release, and it’s so good for the body. I really think that walking brings the body and the soul together. It’s something my husband and I started doing together. It’s been four years since we started our walking practice – 60 to 90 minutes is usually the goal. We have a few set walks – there is a hike near our house and two specific walks we do in Santa Monica. And then sometimes we’ll drive to Beverly Hills, park, and just see what happens.”

7. Gwyneth Paltrow's secret for ageing well? Exfoliation

“If you have sun damage or dark spots (like me), Goop Beauty's Dark Spot Exfoliating Sleep Milk is going to save your life. It’s just phenomenal – very, very active. It simplifies my whole routine by addressing multiple skin issues at once, and it feels so good – silky (and not sticky as high-acid serums can be) with this plush, soothing texture. I smooth it on every night before bed and I wake up with baby-soft, glowy, hydrated skin.”

8. Intermittent but intuitive fasting

“I intermittent fast most days, so I finish eating around 7 in the evening and have my first meal of the day sometime between 11am and noon. I had some tests done that showed high levels of inflammation in my body. So I turned to one of the smartest experts I know in this space – the functional medicine practitioner Dr. Will Cole. After he saw all my labs, he explained that this was a case where the road to healing was going to be longer than usual. So we’ve been doing a version of a protocol he outlines in his forthcoming book, Intuitive Fasting. It’s keto and plant-based but flexible.”

9. An early bedtime, following a 3-step skincare routine

“I eat dinner very early, which I’ve noticed has been great for my overall health and digestion. Not going to sleep on a full stomach has been a game-changer for my sleep. I also don’t drink alcohol that much anymore. Embarrassingly, we’re in bed by about 8:30pm, and I love to watch TV. I know you’re not supposed to, but I find it very relaxing. For me, it’s a way to lull myself to sleep. And by 9:30pm... well, good night!”

Gwyneth Paltrow's 3-step nighttime skincare routine

  1. "Firstly, I always do my Goop Beauty Microderm Instant Glow Exfoliator. It is one of our absolute bestsellers, and I use it pretty much every night in the bath. So before I get in, I put it on my dry skin, scrub it in, and leave it on as I’m getting in the bath. And then I take it off.”

  2. "Secondly, it’s onto my favourite cream I’ve ever used – the Goop Beauty All-in-One Nourishing Face Cream . It works beautifully as a night cream. It’s really firming with nourishing and youth-boosting benefits – and I love its rich, thick texture. Our clinical results speak for themselves with this one – it's incredible what it can do for your skin.”

  3. "Thirdly, I use the Goop Beauty All-in-One Super Nutrient Face Oil multiple times a day, including before bed. I’m obsessed! I want to bathe in it. I want to drink it. It’s been a total game-changer for my skin. It’s made with Bakuchiol – a natural Retinol alternative that’s fantastic for fine lines and wrinkles – and it’s light and absorbs easily, cocooning skin like nothing else. I can’t live without it. Used over the face cream, it’s so good for my dry skin – it seals in all the goodness.”

10. Face and body acupuncture

“Those little needles have helped me through many an ailment. Eastern medicine has a different approach than Western medicine — it’s more holistic. The root of the problem is addressed, as opposed to a symptom being attended to with prescription medication, only to return. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful as hell for a round of antibiotics or surgery when necessary. But I have been helped tremendously by various practices that help the body heal itself. When implemented by a professional with experience, the benefits can work wonders.”
