Bathroom talk: Alexis Foreman

From art director to full-time content creator, Alexis Foreman has spent years shaping her world with a discerning eye for beauty, design, and meaningful self-expression. In this conversation, Alexis opens the door to her most intimate space — the bathroom — to share the routines, reflections, and values that guide her creative and personal self-care journey. Simple, thoughtful, and unpretentious, her perspective reminds us that beauty isn’t about transformation, but about care, intention, and the quiet confidence of feeling at home in your own skin.

Tell us everything about yourself

“I originally trained as a graphic designer and worked as a designer and art director, so visual language has always been central to how I see the world. When my three boys were very little, I started a blog as a creative outlet — a space to explore my interests in fashion, beauty, design, art, and lifestyle. As Instagram began to emerge, that expression naturally moved there. Over time, a community grew, and opportunities followed, and in 2017, I made the decision to leave my job and create content full-time. It wasn’t something I planned strategically — it evolved very organically from genuine curiosity and consistency.”

How do you decide which products, practices, or rituals deserve a place in your life?

“I’m very selective. I don’t respond well to excess or noise, so anything I bring into my life has to earn its place. I look for quality, integrity, and longevity — whether that’s a skincare product, a habit, or even the information I consume. If something feels grounding and supportive rather than overwhelming, it tends to stay.”

Do you use the same selective eye for your self-care routine?

“Definitely. I approach self-care in the same way I approach design: editing is everything. My skincare routine is considered, but not complicated. Each product has a clear role, and I’m very loyal once something works for me. I’d rather use a few excellent formulas consistently than constantly rotate through new things.”

What does beauty mean to you now?

“Beauty has become much simpler for me. It’s no longer about chasing a look, but about feeling well — physically and mentally. Wellness and self-care are practical tools now, not indulgences. They support my energy, my mood, and ultimately how I show up in my work and personal life.”

How has your relationship with beauty evolved alongside your creative journey?

“As I’ve grown creatively, I’ve moved away from transformation and towards maintenance. Beauty is less about changing myself and more about caring for what’s already there. That shift has been incredibly grounding.”

Was there a moment when you stopped trying to look a certain way and started trying to feel a certain way?

“It happened gradually, but simplifying my routines was a big turning point. When I focused on how I wanted to feel — rested, strong, comfortable in my skin — everything became more aligned. Looking ‘good’ stopped being the goal and became a by-product.”

What are your skincare essentials at the moment?

“Gentle, barrier-supporting products are essential for me. I always start with a comforting cleanser — I love Susanne Kaufmann’s Purifying Cleansing Gel for how effective yet gentle it is. I also love the Oh My Cream Skincare Cleansing Oil & Foam Double Cleansing Set — I never skip a double cleanse in the evening. For hydration and skin health, I gravitate towards well-formulated serums like Goop Exosome Hydration Therapy Serum or Tata Harper Rejuvenating Serum, especially those focused on soothing and strengthening the skin. A nourishing moisturiser is non-negotiable — Augustinus Bader’s The Rich Cream has been a long-time favourite — and SPF is something I never skip. Healthy skin is the foundation of ageing well.”

Beyond cosmetic products, what wellness ritual or small self-care act brings you the most joy right now?

“Walking in the morning is incredibly important to me. It gives me space to process my thoughts and move my body before the day starts. I also love weight training at the gym and finishing with a sauna — it’s time that’s just for me, and it makes a huge difference to my wellbeing.”

How do you feel in your own skin at the moment?

“I’m much more patient with myself. I don’t fight ageing, but I do believe in taking care of myself so that my skin remains healthy and supported. Care rather than control is a mindset I stand by.”

Do you feel like there’s a difference between your public, curated world and the more private moments you experience in spaces like the bathroom?

“Yes, and that distinction is very important to me. I’m quite selective about what I share online and I value my private life deeply. The bathroom is a very real, unfiltered space — it’s about care rather than image. Social media is a tool for my work, not something I want to be a slave to.”

How do you stay true to yourself in a world that constantly compares?

“Comparison is definitely a danger in this industry, and I actively push against it. I think age helps — at 46, I’m less interested in external validation. I don’t seek affirmation from my followers; I make sure my emotional needs are met through my relationships with my husband, my sons, and my close friends. That grounding makes it much easier to stay true to myself.”

What does ageing well look like to you?

“Emotionally, it’s self-awareness and calm. Visually, it’s healthy, well-cared-for skin rather than trying to look younger. Creatively, it’s depth — allowing life experience to enrich the work rather than chasing relevance.”

If you were art-directing the next chapter of your life, what mood would it have?

“Intentional and calm. Life is busy, so rest has become very important to me — being deliberate about it rather than fitting it in last. I really believe that inflow is outflow: what you read, watch, and absorb shapes what you create and how you feel. This next chapter feels slower, wiser, and more generous — especially as my sons find their own creative paths. Being able to mentor them and share what I’ve learned has been incredibly fulfilling. It’s a beautiful full-circle moment.”
