How to choose and apply your foundation?

Looking for a foundation to suit your skin type and skin tone? Follow our guide to read our tips for finding the perfect foundation to add to your make-up bag.

I have combination to oily skin

To control shine when you have oily skin, powder textures work best. Our Oh My Cream Skincare Mineral Powder Foundation SPF20 will be your best to even out and protect your skin, and can conceal minor redness or imperfections. On the other hand, if you have combination skin that tends to be fairly dehydrated, we recommend applying a cream-textured foundation like Odacité Mineral Drops Tinted Sunscreen SPF50, then applying a few dabs of our Mineral Powder to mattify the T-zone.

I have dry skin

If you have dry skin, your skin is likely to mark during the day. To make your skin feel more comfortable and avoid this "cardboard" effect, but also to boost your skin's radiance, opt for Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint SPF30, a lightweight foundation that's easy to apply and leaves a luminous finish on the skin.

I have normal skin

Powder or cream? Both are suitable if you have normal skin. It's just a question of what finish you want: glowy and shiny or matte and controlled. Our favourite foundation with a fluid texture for a luminous finish? Ilia True Skin Foundation, a foundation with a bare-skin effect and adjustable coverage for a finish that looks almost Photoshopped.

I have sensitive skin

For sensitive skin, the most suitable complexion products are those with a protective formula. Rich in Niacinamide, Ilia C Beyond Triple Serum SPF30 is ideal to even out the complexion and protect the skin against external aggression and the damaging effects of UV rays thanks to its SPF30 mineral filter. A product that's part foundation, part tinted serum, with very light coverage to even out the complexion and boost radiance.

How do you find the right shade of foundation for your skin tone?

You have ivory, fair, light, medium, matt or black skin, but do you know your skin tone? Because it's this precise point that will help you find the foundation colour best suited to your skin tone.  Pink, golden or neutral? Here's how to determine them:

  • You have pink undertones if: your skin reddens easily at the slightest difference and the veins on your wrists tend to be purplish. Another clue? You sunburn easily.

  • You have golden undertones if: the veins on your wrists are green and you tan quite well. You don't have pink undertones, but rather yellow/peach.

  • You have neutral undertones if: you can't tell the colour of your veins? They're both purple and green, aren't they? You're neutral ;-)

And when in doubt between two shades, we recommend you opt for the darker, neutral shade. And to find the perfect shade from our selection of foundations, check out our shade guide.

How do I apply foundation?

Whether it's liquid or compact, always start by applying it from the centre of the face outwards to distribute the foundation as evenly as possible. A liquid foundation can be applied directly with the finger for a more natural finish, but our Oh My Cream Skincare Complexion Brush can also be used by novices to work on powder or cream finishes without streaking. For a natural finish, we also love the Skin2Skin Beauty Sponge from RMS Beauty, a sponge that makes it easy to blend liquid or cream foundations onto the face. Note that it's always best to start by applying very little foundation, then work it in and add more if necessary.
