Tell us all about yourself

“My name is Filomena Natoli and I'm a makeup artist working across fashion and celebrity. My interest in fashion began in my teenage years, and my interest in makeup peaked at the age of 16. I was very resolute that I was going to become a makeup artist, and here we are.”

When did you realise makeup could become a career?

“At the time, it was the late 1990s, and being a makeup artist was a niche occupation; nowadays, it feels like everyone wants to be a makeup artist. The community has grown exponentially. The realisation that it could be a viable career came over time as I began working consistently.”

How has your relationship with makeup evolved?

“At the beginning of my career, it was all about glamour, and it was a period where it was almost like “more is more” as time went on, fashion evolved & I gained confidence in my taste and skill. My relationship with makeup has become more minimal, quieter yet more confident, if that makes sense. Don’t get me wrong, I still love creating a statement makeup look, but makeup is not just about those big bold statement looks, it’s so much more.”

What do you love most about your job?

“I love the ability makeup has to transform, to create beauty, to empower. The travel aspect of my job I never take for granted, and the people I meet along the way add to the beauty of the job.”

How would you describe your vision of beauty?

“My vision of beauty will always be timeless, skin-focused, polished yet nonchalant.”

Which part of your face do you most enjoy doing makeup on?

“Recently, I have been enjoying applying makeup on my lips as I have found that my lips seem to wake up my face these days. On others, I love working on skin, creating beautiful skin brings me a lot of joy and satisfaction.”

What would you say is your signature look?

“I don’t really want to be defined by one look, as no face is the same, and there are so many factors to take into account when creating a makeup look. But I guess I probably am known for my skin work.”

And what if you could only keep three…

"Only 3?! The Victoria Beckham Beauty Lip Definers and Satin Kajal Liner, and of course The Concealer Pen."

How different is doing makeup backstage compared to working with clients or on shoots?

“It’s a faster pace, the look is predetermined, so there’s no surprises, it’s my job to lead my team to ensure we execute the look well, on time and en masse, usually up to 40 models. It’s an adrenaline rush and very rewarding for everyone involved. Working with Celebrity clients and shoots is a completely different process and pace. I really love working with celebrity clients. It's a more intimate 2-3 hour process for glam and styling, with a little time at the end to document the final look.”

Have you noticed any recurring trends or beauty moods from this season’s Fashion Weeks?

“Minimalism and cleaner looks and flawless skin, which always resonates. The minimal beauty across most of the shows allowed space and balance for the collections to hold focus.”

What’s your go-to ritual for prepping the skin before makeup?

“I generally don’t overprep the skin. I try to keep it to 3 skin prep products, incorporating a gentle tool or manual facial massage, as any more than that can sabotage the makeup look you’re trying to create, as too many skincare layers can lead to pilling and can also disrupt the skin. What I use in particular varies as I like to assess the skin and prescribe accordingly.”

What’s your simple feel-good tip for days when you’re not at your best?

“If you’re having an off day, my remedy is to fake good skin by simply using a tinted moisturiser, bronzer to add colour to the face and balm highlighter to create the illusion of a 'post facial glow’”.

What advice would you give to anyone exploring their identity through makeup?

“Go for it! But make sure you look after your skin in the process.”
