Behind the Blush: Filomena Natoli on the Art of Effortless Beauty
Few artists capture effortless beauty quite like Filomena Natoli. With her signature “less-is-more” approach and a refined eye for detail, the Australian makeup artist has become a go-to name in the fashion and celebrity beauty worlds. We caught up with her to chat about her beginnings, her beauty philosophy, and her go-to tricks.
When did you realise makeup could become a career?
“At the time, it was the late 1990s, and being a makeup artist was a niche occupation; nowadays, it feels like everyone wants to be a makeup artist. The community has grown exponentially. The realisation that it could be a viable career came over time as I began working consistently.”
What do you love most about your job?
“I love the ability makeup has to transform, to create beauty, to empower. The travel aspect of my job I never take for granted, and the people I meet along the way add to the beauty of the job.”
How would you describe your vision of beauty?
“My vision of beauty will always be timeless, skin-focused, polished yet nonchalant.”
What would you say is your signature look?
“I don’t really want to be defined by one look, as no face is the same, and there are so many factors to take into account when creating a makeup look. But I guess I probably am known for my skin work.”
And what if you could only keep three…
"Only 3?! The Victoria Beckham Beauty Lip Definers and Satin Kajal Liner, and of course The Concealer Pen."
What’s your go-to ritual for prepping the skin before makeup?
“I generally don’t overprep the skin. I try to keep it to 3 skin prep products, incorporating a gentle tool or manual facial massage, as any more than that can sabotage the makeup look you’re trying to create, as too many skincare layers can lead to pilling and can also disrupt the skin. What I use in particular varies as I like to assess the skin and prescribe accordingly.”
What’s your simple feel-good tip for days when you’re not at your best?
“If you’re having an off day, my remedy is to fake good skin by simply using a tinted moisturiser, bronzer to add colour to the face and balm highlighter to create the illusion of a 'post facial glow’”.
