Tell us about yourself

“My name is Dariia Day and I’ve been a makeup artist based in Paris for the past 17 years. I work with celebrities and across the fashion and beauty world, notably during Fashion Weeks and for magazine covers, in collaboration with leading fashion and beauty houses. I started doing makeup really young, from age 16. And I continued my training in Los Angeles and Hollywood before moving to Paris, where I built my career shoot by shoot until signing with my first agency."

"Alongside all this, in 2016 I launched my silk brand, By Dariia Day, dedicated to beauty and well-being. This followed my discovery of silk’s skin and hair benefits 13 years ago, while I was dealing with rosacea. Together with my family, who have a background in the textile industry, I developed a line designed to soothe and protect the skin and hair – one that creates a cosy, safe space for self-care. For me, beauty begins with self-care and quality sleep. For the past two years, I’ve also been working on a new beauty line centred around an ingredient that fascinates me: vegan silk… Watch this space!"

Where did your passion for makeup come from?

“I became fascinated with fashion from age 13. My parents had a children’s clothing business, so my mum followed trends closely. I was enchanted by the industry, but especially by what happened backstage at shows. I grew up in a little town in Poland not knowing anyone in the industry, but I used to watch backstage Fashion Week footage with Pat McGrath on Fashion TV and truly believed that one day I would find myself amongst it all. And that dream came true – I worked with Pat McGrath’s team for 11 years across all the Fashion Weeks.”

Tell us about your early career

“From a young age, I always believed I would become a fashion makeup artist. I’ve always been very ambitious and I never gave up. My journey wasn’t easy. I arrived in Paris at age 19, without speaking French, without knowing anyone, and without even knowing where I would stay. It took time and a lot of resilience to get to where I am today. Things began to shift after about a year in Paris, during which I did a lot of shoots and tests and built my portfolio.

One day, my school in Hollywood told me I had been selected as student of the year, meaning I was invited to Milan to meet an agent and shoot with incredible photographers. That experience enormously inspired me and gave me the confidence boost I needed.

And during that trip, something incredible happened – I received a call from Dior to work as a makeup artist on their upcoming campaign with Emily Weiss. It was my first major campaign. After that, I worked on an event with Maria Giulia Maramotti, who then booked me for all the Vogue shoots with Max Mara.

My portfolio became really solid, I signed with my first agency, and my career really started to took off.”

How does your broader view of beauty influence your work?

“For me, beauty goes far beyond makeup. It includes well-being, sleep, skin, energy and self-confidence. All of this influences how I work, as I’m always seeking to enhance natural beauty, rather than conceal it.”

How does your work influence your own makeup routine?

“I love testing new products and staying up to date with what’s new. Since my pregnancy, I’ve leaned more towards clean beauty. Most days I go for my ‘Day Skin’ base, with softly defined brows and mascara – simple, but fresh and healthy-looking.”

What’s in your makeup bag right now?

“The Ilia Limitless Lash Mascara is one of my favourite mascaras, in both black and brown.

The BabyBlade brow pencil from Victoria Beckham Beauty – naturally defined, structured brows bring balance to the face, without appearing too heavy. I especially love the shades intended for blondes.

The Lip Balm from Augustinus Bader – an excellent hydrating balm that I take with me everywhere.

The Ilia Lip Sketch Hydrating Crayon in shade Pampas – I use it on both the lips and cheeks for a fresh, creamy flush.

The Oh My Cream Skincare Tinted Cream SPF20 – for those more important days or when I want to even out my complexion slightly. I love that it also includes sun protection.

The Concealer Pen with TFC8® by Victoria Beckham Beauty – I love using concealer, just to correct the areas that need a bit of coverage.

And the Brightening Eye Gel from Tata Harper, which I use as daily eye care, but also as a highlighter for a touch of light.”

And what’s in your bathroom?

“I love the bath and body oils from Susanne Kaufmann. Since my pregnancy, I’ve also been using Talm’s Mega Oil. For my face, in winter I use The Rich Cream from Augustinus Bader, the Radiance Serum from Oden and, more recently, the Quinque Eye Contour Mask for an extra boost of hydration around the eyes.”

Which facial feature do you most enjoy enhancing with makeup?

“For me, it’s the skin – adding a little bronzer, a touch of glow and a hint of colour to the lips and cheeks, just to look fresher. I also love the Tata Harper Brightening Eye Gel, which I also use as a highlighter.”

How has your relationship with makeup evolved throughout the course of your career?

“At the beginning, I was much more focused on pure creativity, namely colour, texture, and artistic expression. Over time, I became captivated by makeup’s power to boost women’s confidence. Especially that unexplained magic when makeup appears almost invisible, yet the person looks so much more beautiful, healthy and confident. Today, that’s my signature style – what I call #DaySkin: an ultra-fresh, transparent base that gives a real healthy glow. It’s the type of base that works perfectly on its own or paired with a bold lip, defined eyes, or a creative editorial look. It lets you achieve a modern, fresh finish, unlike layering too much foundation and powder.”

How does your routine change with the seasons?

“For makeup, I always like to keep a fresh, luminous finish, so it doesn’t change much. When I love a product and it aligns with my vision of beauty, I stick with it. In winter though, I use richer creams and balms.”

What’s your pre-makeup skin prep routine?

“I like to dedicate at least 15% of the time I spend with my clients to skincare, and I perform a facial massage using my hands and beauty tools to de-puff and hydrate the skin, boost radiance and encourage relaxation. I often apply eye masks and a rich lip balm – sometimes a lip scrub if needed. For me, this is the key to perfectly prepped skin, especially before an important event.”

Do you have a makeup tip for glowy skin in minutes?

“Ensure skin is well hydrated and spend at least a minute massaging and encouraging facial drainage. It naturally boosts radiance and reduces puffiness. For instant glow, I like to use a highlighter or illuminating base, then a multi-stick for lips and cheeks, a little lip balm, and a touch of concealer where needed. And just like that, you have a fresh, radiant complexion.”

Do you have any simple, feel-good rituals?

“Daily self-care. For me, quality sleep is essential – it’s the foundation of everything. Surround yourself with people you love. Listen to your body. Love yourself.”

In your opinion, what’s the one makeup product everyone should have?

“I would say concealer. Many people still rely mainly on foundation, when full face coverage is often not necessary, since the skin is already beautiful. With concealer, you can correct specific zones, where needed, and keep the rest of the skin looking fresh and natural.”
