In conversation with Sarah Brown, founder of Pai Skincare

From navigating her own confidence-crushing skin crisis to building a successful beauty brand, Pai Skincare founder Sarah Brown knows first-hand just how deeply our skin can affect how we feel about ourselves – and the difference the right care can make. An expert in sensitive skin and a reassuring voice for those navigating flare-ups, she opens up about her own skin struggles, shares pearls of skincare wisdom, and reveals her considered self-care routine.

Tell us all about yourself

“I’m a Mum to 2 boys, was born in London, am half Kiwi, and spent a period of my secondary schooling in Melbourne. I now live in West London and can often be seen getting from A to B on my Bobbins bike!

I started my career in communications – marketing everything from holidays and McVities Digestives, to credit cards and Nike trainers. I then later found myself in the world of wine based in California. This was a formative role, being on the inside of a global family business, glimpsing the inner workings of the supply chain and finding ways to stand out on a crowded supermarket shelf!”

In your mid-twenties, your skin changed almost overnight. How do you look back on that period now?

“With mixed emotions. If I hadn’t been through that experience Pai wouldn’t exist. In the moment though, I felt utterly powerless and self-conscious. I lost all my confidence which took years to build back. Anyone that has struggled with their skin will understand how all-consuming those feelings can be.”

What would you say to someone navigating unexpected changes in their skin?

“My advice would be this: your skin is like a fingerprint, it’s unique to you. So rather than desperately following skin advice online (which can often be contradictory) take back control by tuning into the cues your skin is giving you.

Keeping a diary was life-changing for me. I documented my daily diet, menstrual cycle, stress, sleep quality and skincare reactions. It’s painstaking but, over time, it is amazing the patterns that emerge – which will help you make informed decisions on product and lifestyle choices. Take each baby step, be patient, and they will pave the way to happier, healthier skin you can depend on.”

Why did you decide to launch Pai Skincare in 2007 and what did the early days of the brand look like?

“I wanted to reimagine what skincare could look and feel like for someone like me. High performing products that were (provably) 100% natural, beautifully packaged and that I could use without fear of irritation. I had hyper-reactive skin so felt I had limited options despite wanting it all!

Like some of the best businesses out there, the brand was born out of a personal problem, and a garage.  My husband and I built it brick by brick, customer by customer, with £15,000 of savings.”

How does Pai’s skin philosophy translate into its formulas?

“Products that are formulated to be suitable for sensitive or sensitised skin is our base-line and non-negotiable. However, the formulas must serve a genuine consumer need, solve a specific skin concern and deliver daily nutritional support.

Thanks to advances in biotechnology we are able to produce results-driven, concentrated 100% natural actives – like retinoids and niacinamide – previously only available in synthetic form. They are only one piece of the puzzle though. Our philosophy is that you also need a supporting skincare diet of vitamins, antioxidants and fatty acids. The food analogy here is important. You wouldn’t eat junk food every day and pop a vitamin to maintain your long term health. It’s the same in skincare – you need all the daily nutrition, not just the advanced actives, for ultimate skin longevity.”

Beyond your skin journey, what other life experience has profoundly shaped who you are today?

“I nearly lost my sight, age 25, in a freak accident – so I look at a great sunset or smile with a level of gratitude! Having kids has also brought perspective too and forced me to be super organised. The juggle is real.”

What does daily self care look like for you?

“Starting and ending the day right, because the in-between bit is invariably messy and unpredictable. That means properly fuelling in the morning – my breakfast routine is homemade granola full of seeds, berries and nuts, and a cup of green Sencha tea. Then a deep skin cleanse (and moment of calm) in the evening with Pai Skincare's Light Work Cleansing Oil and Middlemist Seven Cream Cleanser. A proper hair brush before bed is also a natural bookend to the day. I love my La Bonne Brosse No.1 Universal Hair Care Brush which is canary yellow. It makes me happy every time I use it."

What are two Pai Skincare products you can’t live without?

“Century Flower Barrier Defence Mist which is the product I use more frequently than any other in our range. Often 4-5 times per day. I’m a serial mister, spritzing between skincare steps to layer in hydration as well as my foundation brush for the ultimate, dewy skin effect.

I also love our NAD+ Renewal Serum – which is the product that has had the biggest impact on my fine lines in the shortest time.”

Beyond skincare, how do you look after yourself?

“Getting enough sleep is my absolute no.1. There’s almost no problem that can’t be surmounted after a good 8 hours! I also started weight training a year ago and have never looked back. I was previously a fervent gym no-goer, but it’s absolutely transformed my overall health and sense of self. On the weekend I make bread and read – both of which calm my mind and are creatively nourishing.”

What is the best beauty advice you’ve ever been given, and from whom?

“Less is more and don’t pick – both from my Mum when I was struggling with spots as a teenager. The tendency can be to throw the kitchen sink at breakouts but this can cause other knock-on imbalances in the skin and are counter productive. My advice now to others is focus on finding your holy grail cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin or imbalance your pH, because this causes a cascade of problems that even the most expensive serum can’t fix.”

How would you like to see Pai evolve in the future?

"I would love to see Pai continuing on its journey of showing and proving how products built on natural science can transform skin. The possibilities are endless."
