Can you tell us more about your philosophy about inflammation?

We are bombarded  with inflammatory influences every day, from harsh skincare ingredients to UVA and UVB rays, stress, lack of sleep, free radicals, tailpipe emissions, HEV rays, smoking, alcohol and sugar. Inflammation can appear on the skin in the form of anything as minor as redness, flaky skin or mild irritation to more serious conditions like acne, premature ageing, redness, enlarged pores, and other skin dysfunctions including psoriasis, rosacea, and perioral dermatitis. My whole skincare philosophy is focused on combatting inflammation and its consequences and to adapt our lifestyle for an anti-inflammatory one.  Doing this will have both an immediate and long-term effect on skin ageing and your overall health.  This is the key for beautiful skin for me.

What are your key steps for healthy and radiant skin?

it’s not just about putting a topical cream on; there is a holistic approach to reducing inflammation and achieving wellness. My fundamental advices never change – healthy skin is glowing, beautiful skin. Protect and boost your skin barrier function, provide your skin with essential nutrition, drench the skin with hydration and combat inflammation with skincare ingredient science. Allow your skin to heal and have full skin barrier functions to protect from stressors outside. Avoid make-up where you can, aggressive skincare products and harsh treatments and follow an anti-inflammatory and simple lifestyle;

For me, this means I make sure I get enough sleep, take daily exercise, avoid stress, protect against urban and digital pollution and avoid excess alcohol, sugar, fried and processed foods. Anti-inflammatory foods like avocados, salmon, olive oil, tomatoes, nuts, dark berries, and green tea are my constants for daily self-care, sports (I like to move every day), and meditation, yoga and breathing exercises are also key. And I try to have a Buddhist-like outlook to life; I like to keep a happy spirit and try not to worry about the past and the future – it’s important to live in the present.

What does your daily skincare routine look like at the moment?

At the moment, my skincare routine goes something like this: twice a week, I’ll use the Enzyme Cleanser, in the shower on my face and body to remove dead skin cells, boost circulation and encourage skin renewal. I then apply the Hyaluronic Serum and The Better B Niacinamide Serum and I’ll then apply my Super Anti-Aging Face Cream, and, when I have dark circles or puffiness, my Super Anti-Aging Eye Cream. My Face Mask, which I use every single day, acts as an effective 15 - 20-minute boost of rich hydration and doubles as an overnight treatment too, you can mix in a little Night Serum Regenerating when using it at night.

“Heal and protect your skin and it will glow.”

How do you manage stress in your daily routine?

Stress unleashes excessive levels of Cortisol, a “fight or flight” hormone that can cause inflammation in the skin and up-regulates the production of excess sebum, leading to irritation, breakouts, acne and worsening existing skin dysfunctions. I allow myself a moment of self-care every day. I apply my hydrating Face Mask in the morning whilst I am having my coffee and going through my emails – I have to be time efficient, and this works quickly to provide optimum hydration to my skin. It also feels amazing.  I have always been inspired by Dr. Deepak Chopra and often listen to his meditations for ten to 20 minutes to help me unwind or when I’m in need of recentring. I also like to go skiing or do Pilates or yoga - it’s a great and relaxing way to keep fit and flexible.

And how do you promote good sleep?

Hormone levels and other changes that occur while we sleep make this a critical period for cellular rejuvenation and related processes. Cortisol also interferes with sleep, another trigger of inflammation. I don't drink much, I don't eat big, heavy meals close to bedtime and I always make sure my room is dark, quiet and device-free - the blue light emitted from screens triggers the fight or flight hormone Cortisol that keeps you awake. If I am feeling a little bit stressed, Maintaining a skincare routine at night, for additional anti-ageing support, which include the Super Anti-Aging Night Cream, followed by my Super Anti-Aging Eye Cream or Eye Cream. Cleansing, hydration and nourishment is of course key to support your skin’s nightly renewal processes.

What are your go-to activities to have the glowing skin you have?

Moving is one of the key anti-ageing devices of all. It’s also just a great start to the day and those endorphins are the best feeling. I am a tomboy at heart and love sports. I like to mix it up - walking, biking, Pilates, yoga, tennis and skiing. I have the same approach to fitness as I do with skin – nothing should hurt - feeling a little sore or fatigued is normal when you’re exercising but avoid workouts that leave your body in pain – that can be a sign of inflammation.

You share a lot of recipes on Instagram, but what are your favourite recipes to combat inflammation?

I love to begin my day with Bircher Muesli. It’s easy to make and oats are rich in several nutrients including fibre, carbohydrates, plant-based protein, and B vitamins that together can help aid digestion, reduce oxidative stress in the gut, lower cholesterol levels and boost brain function. I have my own perfected recipe you can follow here.

For lunch, I usually make this Anti-Inflammatory Salad with greens, pomegranate, veggies and sometimes feta cheese and my homemade dressing. For dinner, we mix it up, but I love cooking a Thai vegetable curry or teriyaki salmon with roasted vegetables. My daughter Pepper loves pasta so I often cook pasta with a fresh tomato sauce or the other day, I made one with rocket salad, pine nuts and dried tomatoes. We try to keep it healthy but still yummy.
