What is an LED mask

Based on light therapy technology, LED masks are skincare devices that use photobiomodulation. This process involves delivering light energy that penetrates the skin and reaches the mitochondria, the cell’s energy centres, to support cellular regeneration. This triggers a biochemical reaction that helps reduce cellular oxidative stressa key factor in skin ageing, inflammation and loss of skin elasticity – while accelerating cell regeneration, helping to slow signs of ageing and restore suppleness and firmness to the skin.

What are the benefits of an LED mask?

Each LED mask diffuses different LED colours and wavelengths. These penetrate more or less deeply into the skin and thus differently affect the epidermis, dermis or hypodermis.

  • Blue light primarily penetrates the epidermis, where it works on the skin’s surface layers and helps purify the skin (notably by targeting the bacteria responsible for blemishes).

  • Red light has anti-ageing properties and penetrates the dermis to help stimulate collagen and elastin production.

  • Infrared light penetrates deeper into the skin, reaching the circulatory level to help reduce inflammation and support skin regeneration.

Are LED masks harmful for the skin?

In short, no. LED masks are safe when used correctly. Unlike UV light, LED light does not burn the skin or cause long-term damage. However, it is recommended to avoid use during pregnancy, in cases of epilepsy, or when taking photosensitising medication. As for the delicate eye area, again LED masks do not pose a risk. However, you should avoid looking directly at LEDs during a light therapy session. Silicone eye shields are usually provided — use them if you are particularly sensitive to light or experience any discomfort.

How to use an LED Mask?

While it has the power to transform your skin, you don't need to spend one-on-one time with your LED mask daily to see results. Recommendations for use vary between different LED masks and your desired results, but generally, 2 to 4 LED sessions per week, lasting 10 to 15 minutes, is what's recommended.

More top tips on how to use your device:

  1. Clean and dry your skin
  2. Apply a specially developed serum (optional)
  3. Place the LED mask on your face and fix it in position
  4. Choose the light setting that corresponds to your needs
  5. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes
  6. Remove, then apply your usual skincare

Which are the best LED Masks?

Choosing an LED mask depends on several criteria:

  • The number of available light settings (red, blue, green, etc.)

  • LED power and treatment duration

  • Comfort and adjustability

  • Certifications and user reviews
