How to find the perfect exfoliating body scrub?

When it comes to beauty routines, body exfoliation is often one of the most overlooked steps. Yet, when used once a week, body scrubs deliver far more benefits than simply revealing softer skin… Did you know, exfoliating can help reduce the appearance of cellulite, improve skin firmness and prevent pesky ingrown hairs after hair removal? Settle in as we take a closer look at the wide-ranging benefits of body exfoliation, share our top application tips and reveal some of our favourite exfoliants and natural body scrubs – because clean exfoliation is in, perhaps more than ever before!

Why exfoliating your body can make all the difference

Whatever type of body scrub you choose, the principle remains the same: it removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Our skin cells are constantly renewing themselves, eventually making their way to the surface of the epidermis, the outermost visible layer of the skin. By exfoliating, we not only sweep away these dead skin cells, but achieve much more in the process. Body exfoliation encourages rapid skin renewal, helping to keep skin looking fresh and revitalised and ward off visible signs of ageing, while the regular massaging action associated with exfoliation can also help stimulate blood circulation.

Dead skin cells can leave skin looking dull and feeling rough, so as exfoliation lifts them away, it reveals smoother, more radiant skin. When practised regularly, body exfoliation may also help minimise the appearance of cellulite, through massaging areas where small clusters of fatty tissue are present. Prone to stretch marks? Body scrubs may also help minimise their appearance and support firmer-looking skin by encouraging elastin production, depending on the formula.

Which body scrub or exfoliating product should you choose?

For exfoliation and hydration in one, opt for an exfoliating body cream such as the Açai Body Scrub by Rudolph Care. Enriched with Apricot Kernel powder, Açai beads and Olive Oil, this silky gel transforms into a milky lotion upon contact with water, leaving skin wonderfully soft. Particularly adapted to dry skin, this moisturising ‘body syrup’ nourishes skin, seals in hydration and combats flakiness.

An ultra-appealing option suitable for all types of skin (even sensitive), and a favourite for its spa-like feel, L:a Bruket’s natural Sea Salt Scrub offers an intensely sensorial exfoliating experience. Available in Rosemary Lavender, Lemongrass and Bergamot Patchouli, there’s a scent to suit every mood.

Want to boost skin firmness and enhance radiance? Try Odacité’s C-Smooth Hydra Firm Body Polish and C-Glow Hydra Firm Body Oil. Powered by a double dose of Vitamin C, this firming dream duo leaves skin soft, supple, visibly smoother and more luminous, with enhanced elasticity.

Short on time? L:a Bruket offers an innovative alternative to traditional exfoliating products. Enriched with AHAs and Hyaluronic Acid, the brand’s Exfoliating Body Serum is designed to be applied directly to dry skin – meaning no shower needed. It gently exfoliates while helping to hydrate the skin. After application, follow with your usual moisturiser and SPF!

For smoother, more radiant, more even skin, massage Goop Beauty’s Microderm Instant Glow Body Polish into your skin when showering. Exfoliating and cleansing, this body polish buffs away roughness and refines skin texture, leaving skin soft, smooth and luminous.

Dry brushing: an exfoliating detox ritual

The benefits of dry brushing are countless, but did you know that just a few minutes of body brushing each day can also help buff away dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling satin smooth? Give your body some extra TLC by making Goop Beauty’s Ultimate Dry Brush part of your daily routine. Morning or evening, use it on dry skin before showering to help exfoliate your skin, stimulate lymphatic circulation and improve the appearance of cellulite. Thanks to its long handle, it’s perfect for targeting hard-to-reach areas, such as your back, for a full-body glow up. Alternatively, try our very own Oh My Cream Skincare Dry Body Brush to experience the benefits of dry brushing at home.

Top tips for body exfoliation

  • Be gentle: Whether you have normal, dry or oily skin, exfoliating too aggressively can irritate the skin and trigger unexpected flare-ups. Most scrubs are effective on their own, without requiring a heavy hand.

  • Brush towards your heart: For better blood circulation benefits, when dry brushing start at your hands and feet and work the brush towards your heart, massaging with circular movements before rinsing with warm water. If you’re feeling courageous, turn the tap to cold for an invigorating, final circulation boost.

  • Don't overdo it: The ideal frequency for body exfoliation is different compared to facial skincare. Exfoliating your body just once a week is enough. Anything more than that and you risk over-exfoliating and irritating your skin.

  • Moisturise: It’s important to apply a moisturiser or body oil to your skin after exfoliating to maintain moisture and keep your skin silky smooth. For best results, after exfoliating gently pat your skin dry, but apply body oil while it’s still slightly damp. The residual moisture helps the oil spread easily and locks in hydration for softer, smoother skin.

  • Before you shave: It's best not to shave or wax immediately before or after exfoliating, as this can irritate the skin and provoke a stinging sensation. However, exfoliating the day before shaving or waxing can actually help prevent ingrown hairs!

  • Before you fake tan: Exfoliating the day before self-tanning can help create a smoother, more even base for a streak-free glow.

  • Adapt application according to the product and the areas you wish to target: A classic grain-based body scrub is generally applied to damp skin, directly in the shower. However, for particularly dry, rough areas such as the feet or elbows, it can also be used on completely dry skin.

  • Consider applying SPF after exfoliating: Depending on the type of exfoliant you choose, sun protection may be recommended. If you opt for a product containing chemical exfoliants or AHAs, which can increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight, apply SPF before sun exposure. This advice is especially relevant for leave-on products. Note: if exfoliating in the evening, SPF needn’t be applied directly afterwards and can instead be applied the following morning.
