Arrive as soon as it opens, with a ticket booked online in hand, to enjoy its electric blue beauty, bamboo-lined paths, towering cacti and shimmering water features before the crowds arrive. On your way out, stop by the garden shop to pick up teas and herbal infusions from The Moroccan Botanist, which blends fine teas with plants native to Morocco. A little souvenir to remember your trip by!

Well worth a taxi ride, MACAAL is an independent museum located a little way out the city. Opened in 2016 in the Al Maaden district, it’s entirely dedicated to contemporary African art. Its exhibitions include pieces from the Fondation Alliances’ collection as well as commissioned works from artists across the continent. Prolong your visit by exploring the Al Maaden Sculpture Park, or enjoy a well-earned rest on the terrace of the museum’s café.

For a farm-to-table meal: Farmers

Head to Guéliz for a dinner to remember. At Farmers, the vegetables don’t come from the market but from the restaurant’s own farm, grown on the outskirts of Marrakech using permaculture principles. The menu changes with the seasons, shifting between Provençal, Mediterranean and Moroccan fare, served in an Art Deco setting. When it comes to wine, let the waiters guide you: the restaurant offers a strong selection of natural wines well worth trying.

For a glimpse of architectural beauty: Dar el Bacha

For a dose of culture, don’t miss Dar el Bacha, with its courtyards and fountains. Built in 1910 for Pasha Thami El Glaoui, the palace is now home to the Musée des Confluences, dedicated to the dialogue between art and culture. Move from room to room, taking in the courtyards, fountains and intricately carved woodwork, before taking a break at Bacha Coffee, tucked inside the palace and boasting what seems like an endless menu of coffees. Good to know: the museum is closed on Mondays.

For late-night fun beneath the trees: Pétanque Social Club

Right in the heart of Guéliz, a former pétanque club dating back to the early 20th century is enjoying a new lease of life. The venue has retained its Art Deco clubhouse and large, leafy garden, but has now become the perfect place for a special soirée. Come for cocktails and music, dinner with a modern twist on traditional Moroccan cuisine and, of course, a game of pétanque beneath twinkling fairy lights. Open until 1am on weekdays and 2am at the weekend.
