Tell us all about yourself

“I'm Babba Rivera, a Swedish Latina based in New York and the founder and CEO of Ceremonia, a clean haircare brand rooted in Latin heritage. Before entering the beauty world, I built my career in tech. I was an early employee at Uber, initially hired to help launch the service in Sweden, which led to a transfer to New York. I fell in love with the city and never looked back. After my time at Uber and later at Away, I founded my own brand marketing agency. But throughout all of it, I felt a pull toward something more personal. I had an urge to do something that would help me share the richness of my culture…"

"Simultaneously, I was also on a bit of a hair journey after years of damage. After successfully replacing my entire skincare routine with a clean, toxic-free ritual, I was able to unlock my most naturally glowing and healthy skin, and this inspired me to want to do the same for my hair. I quickly realised that the haircare industry has been built from a styling-first approach, versus care and health at the core. That gap, combined with a deep desire to reconnect with my Latin heritage and celebrate the richness of my culture, led me to launch Ceremonia in October 2020. I’m proud to see what the brand has been able to become today; award winning products with clinically backed results to actually treat hair concerns at the root, using a ritualistic approach with powerful superfruits from Latin America.”

Growing up, how did your cultural heritage shape your philosophy around beauty and self-care?

“I grew up as the daughter of a Chilean hairdresser who, from an early age, taught me the importance of practising beauty as a form of self-care and utilising natural ingredients from Latin America as medicine for skin and hair. My parents immigrated from Chile to Sweden during the Pinochet dictatorship, and I grew up watching my mother practice self-care rituals in our tiny bathroom. Those rituals felt sacred. They were about nourishment, not vanity. That philosophy is at the heart of everything I do with Ceremonia today.”

What was your relationship with your hair like growing up?

“Hair was everything in our household. My father was a hairdresser back in Chile, but upon immigrating to Sweden he was never able to get a job in the field due to the language barrier. Instead, he practised his passion for hair rituals on me. He taught me from an early age the importance of the ‘care’ aspect of haircare. On wash days, he would give me scalp massages and whip together his own blends of natural oils. On school photo day, he would spend eight hours the night before braiding my hair. But alongside that beauty at home, there was also shame in the outside world for me. I grew up constantly feeling like I needed to assimilate in order to be ‘beautiful’ or ‘successful.’ At a young age, I had a subconscious belief that being Hispanic was a disadvantage, because I never saw any success stories of people like me. Creating Ceremonia is my way of rewriting that narrative.”

Did you always know you would create your own haircare brand?

“Not at all. I never thought I would become a haircare brand founder. I didn't even consider beauty as a career path. I grew up as the daughter of a hairdresser who struggled to make ends meet, so in pursuit of a different future for myself, I embarked on a career journey far from the beauty industry. I attribute a lot of my entrepreneurial spirit to my early days at Uber. It shaped my professional self and helped me develop a growth mindset. Getting things done became basically my middle name. The agency came next, and Ceremonia emerged from there after gaining confidence in the business world, but out of a very personal need and a sense of responsibility to my community.”

What is your philosophy on self-care today?

“My beauty essentials are all focused on nourishment. I'd rather spend my time and money on clean products that help rebuild my skin and hair for a low-maintenance daily routine. ‘Skincare over makeup, and haircare over styling’ is my motto, and my favourite products are the ones that double as both! On an ideal day off, self-care means a full spa day: a 90-minute massage followed by sauna time and a good book. More realistically these days, as a mum of four, it means a hot shower when all the kids are asleep, using the Aceite de Moska Heritage Scalp Remedy Oil and giving myself a little scalp massage. I live by ‘things are better done than perfect’ and consistency. Progress over perfection, but staying consistent is how I approach life.”

What are your skincare staples and makeup musts?

“My favourite hack for skincare is to layer Tata Harper's Regenerating Cleanser with the Resurfacing Mask. This gives you like an instant facial. I'm a huge advocate for layering serums. I have very dry skin, so when I come out of the bathroom my skin is glistening, and I like to let it all soak in while I'm having breakfast, then apply makeup after.  My new favourite serum is from the brand Innisfree, it’s the Vitamin C Brightening Serum that just feels so good on the skin. Then I go in with the Ilia Base Face Milk. It’s the perfect step between a serum and moisturiser, especially if you have dry skin. And last but not least, I use Innisfree’s Green Tea Seed Hyaluronic Cream. What I love about this cream is that it really goes into the skin and does not just sit on top, and it also doesn't leave your face greasy whatsoever. Perfect hydration. For eye cream I love Tata Harper’s Brightening Eye Gel.  It has this like cooling applicator, but it's a metal applicator and the eye cream has a bit of an illuminating effect. The Lip Wrap Hydrating Mask from Ilia is also one of my all-time favourites. And that's it for skincare.

I'm pretty minimal with makeup: a thin, tinted moisturiser is my go-to; I love doing my brows with brow gel, adding a creamy blush and finishing with a nourishing, tinted lip mask. If I want to spice things up, I love a good red lip.”

Could you walk us through your current haircare routine?

“Sunday evenings are my go-to for hair self-care. I start with the Ceremonia Aceite de Moska on my scalp and massage it in with the Scalp Masajeador. It's a relaxing moment to unwind and I love the way the scent blooms with the motion. Then, I deep cleanse my roots with the Papaya Scalp Scrub together with the Scalp Masajeador, followed by the Guava Damage Repair Hair Mask which leaves my hair super shiny and soft. After the shower, I apply the Guava Leave-In Conditioner while my hair is still damp. This is my holy grail product, and our global bestseller for people with dry, frizzy hair like me. I then let my hair air dry in a braid.

Good hair really does begin at the scalp and needs constant hydration. That's something I believe in deeply and push through Ceremonia. On everyday mornings, I like to refresh my hair using the Rescue Spray. It’s the perfect ‘pick-me-up’ for the hair, adds weightless nourishment, detangles, smells divine and keeps the hair protected from heat tools and UV rays. I then finish with the Guava Gloss Drops on my ends for instant gloss (and this also helps lock in the moisture!).”

SOS: Which Ceremonia product do you consider to be a true lifesaver?

Aceite de Moska! Our first ever product and still a favourite staple of mine. It's a scalp remedy oil that helps with overall hair wellness. I apply it directly on the scalp and the ends, leave it on for 15 minutes or overnight, then wash it out. It leaves my scalp perfectly balanced and my hair super soft, naturally shiny and without frizz. It's the product that started it all, and it's still the one I reach for every week without fail. I attribute my long luscious hair to this miracle oil!”

#seo: Guave Leave-In Conditioner

If you had to recommend one Ceremonia product for a perfect hair day, what would it be?

“The Aceite de Moska, it’s the foundation for healthy hair, but our Guava Leave-In Conditioner (or Guava Rescue Spray for those with finer hair) is a close second: lightweight, nourishing and packed with hydration.”

Which product launch or milestone are you most proud of?

“I honestly feel proud of every single product launch because everything we’ve ever brought to market has been a little miracle of itself –  we really push the boundaries for what’s possible with every new product. Most recently, with the Guava Gloss Drops we pushed hard to create a hair oil without any silicones, but with a high concentration of natural ingredients paired with clinically backed results. Another proud launch is our Dry Shampoo. I was so tired of dry shampoos being terrible on the scalp, yet somehow socially accepted as the norm. With our dry shampoo pouf we set out to create a first-of-its-kind formula that is not only effective at tacking greasy roots without any residue or white cast, but that is also kind to the scalp. We’re proud to be awarded Allure’s best of beauty award for the best dry shampoo, and for the dry shampoo to also be microbiome friendly certified.”

You grew up in Sweden, lived in Stockholm and Berlin, and later moved to New York. How has each city influenced your approach to beauty and wellness?

“Sweden gave me a minimalist, functional approach to beauty. Less is more, quality over quantity. Berlin taught me to be my most natural self, no make up and air dried hair, with an emphasis on sustainability. New York is where I reconnected with my Latin roots and found my purpose. I fell in love with the city and never looked back. It's where the scale of the Latin community helped me see, for the first time, how many people had grown up between cultures, just like me. That's what gave Ceremonia its direction.”

Beyond beauty products, how do you stay grounded and inspired? Do you have any wellness rituals?

“Movement, rest and community are everything to me. I make an active effort to carve out space for morning movement at least 4 times a week, and try to book massages once a week or every two weeks if schedules get busy. On weekends I dedicate time to be with my kids, my community, and (if I’m lucky) I can also carve out a little moment of alone time for a nap or to read a book – but admittedly, alone time is really hard in this chapter of my life as a mum of 4 and business leader.”

As a mother of four girls, has motherhood changed the way you view beauty and self-care?

“Profoundly. As a mum of four young children, self-care looks very different now. Sometimes it really is just a hot shower after the kids are asleep. But that's taught me something important: self-care doesn't have to be elaborate to be meaningful. Even five minutes with a good scalp oil is an act of love toward yourself. Motherhood has made me more intentional about those small rituals, and more efficient with time than ever before because I now know its true value. Additionally, seeing my girls watch me every morning has made me so aware of my own rituals and what they signal to my kids. I want them to grow up with beauty as a sense of self-care and joy, versus a chore you have to do to conform to someone else's idea of beauty.”

What is the most important lesson you hope to pass on to your daughters?

“That their heritage is their superpower, not a disadvantage. I was constantly made to feel that being Latina was a disadvantage. Ceremonia is my way of rewriting that narrative. I want my daughters to grow up seeing themselves represented, feeling proud of who they are, and knowing there is no ceiling on what they can build.”

Looking ahead, what's next for Ceremonia?

“We’re deepening our brand in our roots and ethos. After rapid growth and constant retail expansion and product assortment expansion, I feel compelled to rein things in to ensure we’re aligned in our purpose for the next chapter of growth. This is really a year of strengthening our foundation.”
